3. Essay
Two artists, Peter Max and Sarah Stieber, each have their own styles that are similar to each other. The focus of both artists' styles is color. They both use it to exaggerate the subject by surrounding it with brilliant colors that would not usually be present. However, they carry out this style in different ways. Stieber's style, which she has dubbed "electric realism", consists of an ordinary, everyday environment made interesting with beautiful colors. Max's style is to use the aforementioned exaggeration of color to highlight his portraits of famous characters, such as President Obama and Vincent Van Gogh. Other than color, the two artists' styles are also similar in the way that they both bring an aspect of surrealism to what would usually be a normal setting. More similarities lie in their knowledge of the fundamental components of art: focus, composition, and lighting. Some examples of this include Stieber's piece "Reflection Remix" and Max's portrait of the statue of liberty, Both of these artworks have good focus on the subject, near perfect composition, and great lighting. In conclusion, Sarah Stieber and Peter Max are similar in the way both use color to amplify what would normally be a less interesting setting. However, they contrast in the purpose of the use of this color. Where Max uses it simply to draw attention to a well-known subject, Stieber uses it to make the entire scene exponentially more interesting.
Self Grade: I would give myself an 9.5/10 because I used all of the vocabulary relevant to the comparison of the two artists that we learned throughout the year. This confirms that I have understood the terms that we were taught throughout the course through the DLT.
